A special presentation of The Stars Tonight this month is featured by the Royal Astronomical Society. The RAS was founded in 1820 and encourages and promotes the study of astronomy, solar-system science, geophysics, and closely related branches of science. The Planets 360 is a re-imagining of British composer Gustav Holst’s The Planets orchestral suite. It uses the awe-inspiring Fulldome, 360 degree, format to create a sonically driven and immersive experience, with classic and contemporary interpretations of each planet. For the classic version, awe-inspiring spacecraft images illustrate Holst’s original 1916 score. A modern, abstract take on our solar system neighbors gets a pulsing contemporary score to accompany it. The Planets 360 is one of the outreach projects funded by the UK’s Royal Astronomical Society as part of its 200th anniversary celebrations.

As always we’ll also explore the wonders of the Hawaiian night sky! This month we’ll see how to find Orion and the Winter Circle, Venus, and more! Weather permitting, stargaze through our observatory telescope and observation deck after the show and find the objects discussed in the presentation.
