Learn the fundamentals of graphic design and develop strategies and habits to build an effective visual presence. Study and build on color, type and space as the foundations of developing your design styles. Explore the elements and principles of design, cultivate crucial organizational skills for designers, understand basic sizes and platforms of design collateral, and cover tools to improve your design practice. Class projects employ Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Topics Covered:
• Fundamentals of graphic design: studying elements (space, color, shape, form, value, texture, and line) and principles (balance, unity, variety, emphasis, movement, pattern and proportion) of design, studying multi-media platforms and media sizes
• Sustainability in practice: file organization and management, design sizes, simplicity vs complexity, seeking guidance, giving feedback, and taking visual breaks
• Software and References: Adobe interfaces and compatibility, CANVA, Microsoft PowerPoint and Word, cell phone applications, YouTube channels, Netflix shows: “Abstract: The Art of Design,” “The Creative Brain”
Note: This class is designed for beginning designers with a need to create their own visual presence and design styles.
Prerequisite: Ability to navigate the computer desktop
You will need access to a personal computer, laptop or desktop, with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop loaded. Training files and handouts are provided in advance through Google Drive. Class is taught using Zoom software.
Mary Baghdady is a designer and producer working in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. She is from Charleston, SC and graduated from Clemson University with a BFA in Visual Arts. She works at the Applied Research Laboratory at UH as a media specialist collaborating with engineers to conceptualize multi-media projects. She currently volunteers as Executive Director for Hawaii Filmmakers Collective and works on various film projects as a producer.
