The first INDOPACOM Theater AI & ML Battlespace Tech Talk is designed to educate attendees on the latest advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning technology and its relevancy to the INDOPACOM theater. What is it?…Why do we need it? How does this impact the DoD posture?

Join subject matter experts Bill Burnham and Brigadier General Miles as they discuss the AI and machine learning technology, tools and architectures that are needed to extract value from data, enable new capabilities, and drive digital transformation executing mission requirements with excellence.

Bill Burnham will explore and share a variety of aspects of AI and machine learning, including AI model development and training, machine learning operations (MLOps), data labeling, DevSecOps, drones, computer vision, high performance computing, and other new and innovative tools, techniques and products.

BG Miles is a native of Lyndonville, New York. He received his commission in 1995 upon graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point and began his career as a platoon leader in A Company, 44th Signal Battalion in Mannheim Germany where he successfully deployed his Platoon to Bosnia/Herzegovina as part of Operation Joint Endeavor for 14 months. He next served in Ft Huachuca, AZ where he commanded A Company, 86th Signal Battalion. After 9/11, his Company deployed to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan for 8 months to install the initial communication infrastructure for Operation Enduring Freedom. He was then selected to join the faculty at West Point as an instructor in the Electrical Engineering department after obtaining a Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Afterwards he completed the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS and moved to Ft Campbell, KY assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT). He completed three deployments to Afghanistan while a member of the 101st as a Brigade S6, Division G6 NETOPS officer, and as the Deputy Division G6. He then joined the Army CIO/G6 staff in Washington DC where he served as the current operations chief. After his time in the Pentagon, BG Miles commanded the 307th Expeditionary Signal Battalion stationed in Hawaii and Alaska. Upon completing the National War College, BG Miles returned to Hawaii as the USARPAC D/G6 and then commanded the 516th Signal Brigade which has responsibility for installing, managing and defending Army Networks throughout the Pacific area of operations. Most recently he served as the Director of Operations/J3 at Joint Force Headquarters, DoD Information Networks (JFHQ-DODIN).

BG Miles’ military education includes the National War College, the Command and General Staff College, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses as well as the Airborne and Air Assault courses. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from West Point, a Master of Science in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and Master of Science in Strategic Studies from National Defense University. He also has obtained the Certified Information System Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certifications.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation medal, Army Achievement Medal (one Oak Leaf Cluster), the Airborne Badge, Air Assault Badge and various campaign participation ribbons.

Bill Burnham is the Chief Technology Officer for Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s US Public Sector Business Unit. In this role, Mr. Burnham is responsible for providing expert technical guidance and direction across all Federal Civilian Agencies, the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, State and Local governments and Higher Education Institutions. He works extensively with HPE Labs, and our partners and systems integrators, to design secure Hybrid Cloud and Intelligent Edge solutions for specific problem sets, injecting technology innovation that fosters business and process transformation.

Mr. Burnham is HPE’s Corporate Executive Sponsor for both California and New York State, providing State leadership an industry executive point of view and advice on technology trends, while being an advocate inside HPE for activities involving either State. He also sits on the HPE Corporate Advisory Board for Worldwide Public Sector Solutions, to guide the company’s development efforts, providing an understanding of emerging requirements in order to define innovative solutions that will solve tomorrow’s challenges.

Mr. Burnham joined HPE in 2018, after seven years of federal service as the Chief Technology Officer for the United States Special Operations Command, where he was responsible for the innovation/modernization of the global information and services networks supporting 70,000 special operations users. In this position, Mr. Burnham provided authoritative technical leadership on complex, controversial and precedent setting matters ranging from innovative data center designs to hybrid cloud implementation strategies.

Prior to his service as a government civilian, Mr. Burnham was a career active-duty Army officer with the majority of his assignments in tactical special operations units and joint tactical communications units.

Mr. Burnham attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence, and the University of Southern California, where he received a Master of Science in Systems Management.
