A series of short classes exploring photographing people and places (with any kind of camera), including environmental, occupational, and family portraits, taught by a master portrait photographer. Explore working with the subject, best lens selections for portraits, and new photographic technologies.

Classes can be taken as a series or individually.

Session One: Engaging and Directing the Subject
Learn proven means and methods of establishing contact with your subject(s) and helping them become relaxed and expressive in front of the camera. Explore photographing in different kinds of places—outdoors, residential, unique locations—and using space to your advantage.

Session Two:  Working with Light

Explore facial analysis to determine ideal lighting for the subject, learn to how to use environmental lighting and employ supplementary lighting as needed. Identify the desired “look” of the photograph and learn powerful methods of using light to achieve your expressive goals.

Session Three: New Technologies
Employ creative methods offered by new camera, lens, sensor, and lighting technologies, such as extremely low light, high ISO, lens selection, new forms of lighting, powerful new editing tools, and contemporary camera solutions. Michael also highlights new printing technologies and paper selections from Hahnemuhle and other vendors to help bring their images to life, and encourages participants to print their own images. These technologies, available with most newer cameras or with inexpensive solutions, can offer remarkable new tools for photographic expression.

Class takes place online via Zoom software. Participants are sent a link and preparatory information in advance. 

Michael Gilbert is a highly successful photographer who loves illustrative portraiture and divides his time between his studio in Hawaii and Paris. Michael has had a one man show at the International Museum of Photography has been a headline speaker for Imaging USA, WPPI, Photokina, and Photo Plus. He teaches for Pacific New Media, Passport to the Arts, and engagements world-wide. He loves working with students and doing small seminars in unique and amazing locations.
