Session 1: A Story of Inspiration: Living Wage Success

Join Christy MacPherson, Lead Community Developer at the Hawai`i Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice along with Nate Hix, Food Access Policy & Advocacy Coordinator, Hawaii Public Health Institute as they discuss the huge win of passing a living wage at the Hawaii State Legislature during the 2022 Session. They want to share the many elements that drove the success and inspire you to move your own big policy goals forward.

Session 2: Inspiration into Action: Moving a policy forward, Community Organizing

A win is not accomplished in isolation. There are many organizations, individuals, and groups who join forces to move legislation. Christy & Nate will talk you through the steps that were taken in order to move a big idea into a policy win.

Session 3: Inspiring Others: Media Campaign

Will Caron, Director of Communications for Hawaiʻi Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice, & Nicole Woo, Director of Research & Economic Policy at Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network, share the ways to use a media campaign to engage a larger audience. Join them for the how-tos from planning to implementation and using media platforms to your advantage to engage a broad range of people and organizations.

Session 4: Inspiring Others: Tracking Inspiration at the Legislature

To become an expert in the process of the Legislature, please join us to learn the how-tos from creating a Capitol account, tracking your bill from committee to committee, submitting testimony, accessing others’ testimony, and identifying changes to the bill— and other tips and tricks as well.

Session 5: In the Know- Lunch with a Legislator

12:00-12:50 PM

Have lunch with Representative Jeanne Kapela with Moderator Lisa Maruyama, Hawaii Alliance of Non-Profit Organizations.

Grab your lunch and get to hear from a legislator’s point of view.  What is good practice? What makes progress happen? And many other great pieces of information.  Come prepared with questions, we are looking for audience participation to make sure you are getting the information you need to be successful.
