Ko Olina Resort, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and community organizations, is hosting a free virtual event to celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future.

  • WHAT: 4th Annual World Oceans Day Celebration
  • WHEN: Saturday, June 13 from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • WHERE: OiwiTV’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/OiwiTV

Throughout this special 2-hour virtual event, viewers can learn about sea turtles, interact live with a NOAA scientist, engage in an art lesson, learn how to cook, and more. It will feature some of Hawai’i’s top entertainers, like Kimie Miner, Nathan Aweau, Paula Fuga, Kawika Kahiapo and more. At the end of the event, viewers can learn how microplastics are affecting our world’s oceans, particularly in places far from where humans live, in “The Smog of the Sea,” a film that documents a one-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea.

The Hawaiian ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian Proverb) “Kui ‘ia ka lei moku e Kanaloa” translates literally to “the islands are strung together as lei by Kanaloa, god of the sea” or “the ocean unites humanity.” During these extraordinary times, the ocean has been a source of comfort, a place to recreate and, most importantly, a provider of sustenance for those in need. Now, more than ever, is the time to stand together and unite our efforts to protect our ocean’s legacy for ourselves and for future generations.

This 2020, World Oceans Day is growing the global movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030 — a campaign called 30×30. By safeguarding a least 30% of our ocean through a network of highly protected areas we can help ensure a healthy home for both marine and human life.

The 4th Annual World Oceans Day Celebration is generously supported by Ko Olina Resort, NOAA, the City and County of Honolulu Storm Water Quality Branch, Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa and Four Seasons Resort O’ahu.

World Oceans Day unites and rallies the world to protect and restore our shared ocean. For more information, visit https://virtualworldwceanswaycelebration.eventbrite.com or worldoceansday.org.
