The ʻĀina-Informatics Network is an initiative based at ʻIolani School designed to bring genome science into Hawaiʻi high school classrooms. Our program’s objective is to develop place-based curriculum for ethical genome science that centers on Hawaiʻi’s unique relationships to ‘āina, all while generating real data via a community science approach. These curricula utilize foundational, hands-on laboratory techniques that can be taught out of our mobile genomics lab and highlight real world applications of genome science, such as GMOs, personal genetics, detection of invasive species and the discovery of novel biodiversity. Each project is also designed to engage students in the bioethics dimensions that accompany emerging genomic technologies.
