Lina Sakai the CEO and founder of Fermenstation Co. is helping farmers in Iwate Prefecture, Japan by using rice from fallow fields to produce ethanol for premium cosmetics. Post-fermentation, the grains are fed to local hens, improving the quality of their eggs.
From Zero to 100 farms in five years.
Dana Shapiro is the co-founder and general manager of Hawaii Ulu Cooperative, a farmer-owned co-op based in Kona, Hawaii. In 2015 Dana started an ulu (breadfruit) farm but soon realized to meet the challenges of supply and demand a co-op model would be beneficial. Hawaii Ulu Cooperative has grown from a couple of farms in 2016 to more than 100 farms in 2020.
