Opihi.io is a Kailua-Kona based architectural research and development entity that specializes in automation in construction. Our focus leverages the capacity and complexity that computational technology provides, to advance construction in efficiency, environmental sensitivity, and resilience of habitat. 3D Concrete Printing is a nascent technology that provides great opportunity for Hawai’i to move past lengthy construction timelines, housing crisis, and high labor demands.

Dr. William Cory Foulk and C.E. Ihilani Phillips are professional architects licensed in multiple states including Hawai’i; record architects for more than 6,700 units built across nearly 2,000 projects in 16 countries. Currently designing and deploying robotic additive manufacturing and 3D concrete printing. Skilled in addressing projects with difficult environmental and cultural issues – with the public, public agencies and in public hearings. Creating Private-Public Partnerships to incubate green infrastructure and housing opportunities. Dr. Foulk is an AIA International Award Winner, AIBD National Conceptual Design Winner. ACI National Award Winner. Multiple Local and Regional Awards spanning 30 years. Ihilani has a pedigree of large-scale construction and development in Hawai’i, with architectural experience on institutional scale projects using net positive energy systems including WHEA, Kohala STEM, several Hawaii Universities, and South Pole Station Antarctica.

About the Island Science Lecture Series

The Island Science Lecture Series is a collaboration between the Hawaii Keiki Museum, Startup Hawaiʻi, and the Kona Science Cafe thanks to the generous support of the Hawai’i Tourism Authority. Through a series of events, visitors and residents will be encouraged to “go beyond the beaches” and explore Hawaiʻi Island’s living laboratory of unique and diverse geographies and climates.

Experience the spirit of aloha, and venture into the world of science and innovation as we showcase the remarkable achievements of local pioneers in various fields. From astronomy to agriculture, witness how our island’s innovators have made a global impact and contributed to the advancement of knowledge. Whether you’re a local resident or a curious traveler, these lectures are a gateway to discover the thriving ecosystems that call our island their home, and gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between nature and human impact.

Events will take place once a month, starting July 2023 and running through December 2023. Events will focus on exploring the science, engineering, technology, and cultural aspects of Hawaiʻi Island. The Lecture Series will facilitate critical and meaningful interactions, collaboration, and networking across the scientific, business, and visitor communities.
